Rovers manager Gary Bowyer has confirmed he will use the Capital One Cup as an opportunity to blood some of the fringe players at Ewood Park, shortly after it was confirmed that Rovers will face Scunthorpe United in the opening round.

Bowyer’s boys were knocked out of the League Cup at the first available opportunity last season – with a side containing Yann Songo’o and Josh Morris knocked out on penalties in a pulsating tie with Carlisle United.

But Bowyer is confident a repeat will be avoided, even if he intends to use the same policy of potentially giving the young lads (such as Jack O’Connell) a chance to express a claim for more regular appearances.

“Last season we did that and unfortunately for us we got knocked out on penalties,” said Bowyer to the Lancashire Telegraph.

“We don`t want to be getting knocked out and it certainly wasn`t the plan last season.

“The plan was to put people on the pitch to see how they coped with that environment.

“We`ve got quite a few now who have been out and got League experience so it is probably something we will look at.

“It`s nice to give some of the younger players an opportunity and the Capital One Cup should present a chance to do that.’

The tie takes places three days after the opening league game of the season.
