Tim Cahill pounced late to steal a vital 3 points in Everton’s march to snare a Europa Cup spot, after Blackburn scored two stunning goals to equalize twice following goals from Mikel Arteta and Yakubu.

The game got of to a disastrous start for Blackburn. A sloppy lunging tackle in the box by Captain Nelsen brought down Mikel Arteta, who blasted his penalty past Paul Robinson. 1-0 Everton after 4 minutes.

The game settled after an explosive opening quarter, however Everton were lucky to maintain their full quota on the pitch, after Referee Marriner only handed a yellow card to Arteta who poked Gamst Pedersen in the eye. Gamst was also booked for the incident for his challenge….

Blackburn could count them selves unlucky not to have equalised before the break after several opportunities took unfortunate deflections. Nelsen’s header from 6 yards was cleared of the line by Cahill, whilst Kalinic, Dunn and Andrews all tried their luck from distance. Tim Howard was looking shaky under the high ball, as Kalinic pressed on causing havoc up front.

However, a goal was not to come, as Rovers went into the break down 1-0.

The second half started off much slower then the first, but came into life in the 65th minute. Leighton Baines’ thunderous strike crashed into the wood work. On the counter, David Dunn released Nzonzi, who scored a goal of the season contender, a swerving drive from just over 30 yards.

Rovers came close to taking the lead, a Dunn set piece found Nelsen, however his header looped onto the roof of the net. Yakubu however, made no mistake, as a flicked on long throw fell the the big striker, who had the easiest of headers to restore Everton’s lead, 2-1

Blackburn though, equalised, and in style. A long ball towards Kalinic was knocked down to Roberts, who, on the half volley, blasted into the bottom corner of the net from outside the box. 2-2….Wow!

Everton though turned the heat up, pressing onto the deep Rovers defence. And the goal came in the 92nd minute. Yakubu’s deft first touch allowed him to get around young Phil Jones, slicing the ball across the goal line, leaving Tim Cahill with the simplest of finishes, 3-2 Everton.

A great second half for both teams, with Blackburn left to rue some sloppy marking
