Rovers’ Lucas Neill Hope?

There have been a number of comments accredited to Lucas Neill since the World Cup has ended, many of which have deemed to be derogatory towards Blackburn Rovers. It feels as though this prolonged saga is beginning to bore the face of football as fresh information emerges.

For the first time Rovers` ambitious and vociferous stand-in captain has made comments that suggest there is an outside chance he will stay at Rovers and that he is anything but unhappy at the club.

Speaking in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph before the game against Liverpool last weekend, Neill said:

I’m a professional player. I’ll be wanting to do well for two reasons. One: for Blackburn; and two: to stick it up Liverpool. It’s as simple as that – although I do mean that in the nicest possible way.

This is the first time that Neill has indicated he still has the best intentions towards Blackburn Rovers. His further comments provide clarity on his frame of mind:

I’m a Blackburn player, contracted to Blackburn, and unless they tell me otherwise, I will be there from January till May. Then after that, hopefully I’ll have opportunities through my performances to move onto bigger and better things. If not, I might have to re-sign for Blackburn.

This will surely prompt Hughes to keep hold of one of his star defenders until the end of the campaign in the hope that nothing will materialize from a ‘bigger club`. Initially it would still appear as though Neill`s priority is to move on to ‘bigger and better things` but taking what he has said here on face value there is an outside chance he could still re-sign for Rovers. He concluded by saying:

I had an opportunity to go to Liverpool, it didn’t happen, and that was because the deal that was on the table wasn’t attractive enough to Blackburn. I don’t get a say, the public don’t get a say, so therefore I do what I’m told. That’s the way it’s got to be.

These comments will hopefully provide the Rovers faithful with a few answers to the mounting list of questions surrounding Lucas Neill`s future.

With Newcastle now expressing their interest along with Barcelona and Liverpool for one of the Premiership`s most solid and consistent performers it has to be considered that Neill signing a contract remains a long-shot; but nevertheless it would appear there is hope!
