Following the unfortunate circumstances of Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts’ injury against West Ham United on Sunday, Roberts has since had a successful operation to renovate the injury.

The first half saw the Rovers power-house sustain the injury, breaking his fifth metatarsal in his right foot following a blameless challenge with West Ham`s Jonathan Spector.

Rovers have wasted no time in rectifying the problem and following an operation on Tuesday the good news is that it was a complete success. The bad news for Roberts and the club is that he will be out longer than originally thought and it looks like an extended spell of at least three to four months.

Rovers chairman John Williams had the following to say:

Jason had his operation and we’re glad to say it was successful, but he’ll still be out for about three months.

It’s just one of those things that happens in football.”

This will not be welcome news to manager Mark Hughes as Ryan Nelsen and Steven Reid are already definite long-term absentees with thigh and back injuries respectively. The game in which Roberts sustained his injury saw Brett Emerton, Morten Gamst Pedersen and Shabani Nonda already missing and they could also possibly be absent for the UEFA Cup Group E game against FC Basel on Thursday.

It is always a bad time in a footballer’s career to fall victim to injury but it must be made that much harder when you are just finding your feet coming back from a previous injury and trying to forge your way into a newly joined team.
