Blackburn began their pre-season programme last night with a 4-0 win over Cambridge United at the Trade Recruitment Stadium on Tuesday night.

Rovers fielded a strong side with some youth as players such as Alex Marrow, Nick Blackman and Gavin Gunning got in the on the act with more seasoned players such as Ryan Nelsen, El Hadji Diouf and Keith Andrews.

In a fast start, Irish midfielder Keith Andrews put the Premier League side ahead in the 29th minute from a corker of a free kick from 25 yards and with Paul Gallagher looking threatening as a second striker there was onyl going to be one team getting the second goal.

Just before half time El-Hadji Diouf added that second after some truly shocking defending from the Cambridge back four.

More promisingly, Rovers were very intensive on the quick, sharp and short passing.

The start of the second period saw wholesale changes as Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts were paired up front and new signings Lars Jacobsen and Steven N’Zonzi made their first appearances.

Just as encouraginly, David Dunn made a return and looked the business for 45 minutes.

The game was put beyond Cambridge in the second half when Jason Roberts scored twice more for Rovers in the second half, both goals as a result of some slick build up play.

All in all it was a promising start to the new pre-season with things starting to take shape.

New Signings Watch

– Steven N’Zonzi – By all accounts looked very pacy and lively but needs to bulk up a bit in the muscle department. However a very bright start.

– Lars Jacobsen – According to my friend who was there live, Lars looked as solid as they come and didn’t shy away from offering some good support down the right. Wasn’t tested a great deal but then this was a warm up.

Paul Gallagher

He looked like a man on a mission. He was lively, he wanted the ball and created three major openings. The BEST player on the pitch for the first 45. Good start for the Scot in the mission to impress Big Sam.
