Having already seen Lucas Neill down one offer put forward to him by Blackburn Rovers the club are preparing to make the defender a new and improved contract offer.

The Australian International, as everyone knows is in the final year of his current deal, remained at Ewood after Rovers rejected Liverpool’s advances on transfer deadline day. This now leaves him able to pre-arrange a deal in January to sign for another club for free next summer should he so wish.

It’s still our intention that Lucas will sign a new contract and we will be presenting him with a new variation shortly.”

He did turn our first offer down before the World Cup but we will be offering him an improved version,” said Rovers chairman John Williams.

Neill’s agent Peter Harrison has already claimed that money isn’t the issue with Neill looking for a move away from Ewood; he just feels he needs a change in his career so I’m not sure how an improved offer would change his mind if this is the case?

Meanwhile Dominic Matteo could make a loan move away from Ewood Park despite the transfer window now being closed. The “emergency loan” transfer window opens shortly, allowing Championship sides to pick up new talent on loan deals.
