Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has practically given the transfer of Wael Gomaa the green light saying manager Mark Hughes is “considering whether to pursue his interest.”

Having spent some time on trial with Rovers before the close of the summer transfer window going back to Al-Ahly with the Egyptian side unwilling to let him go at that time, 31-year-old Gomaa spent two days training with Rovers this week, being in England anyway for Egypt’s International friendly with South Africa, which was played in London.

Gomaa is VERY HIGHLY RATED among African footballers, regarded by many as the best defender in the African game being described to me as the “best defender I’ve ever seen!

So now with Hughes having cast his eye over the Egyptian twice he has to decide whether or not to pursue his interest. Speaking to the Telegraph Rovers chairman John Williams said:

Wael came over to England to spend two days with us earlier this week.

He’s now gone back again, and Mark is considering whether to pursue his interest or not.”

It has long since been Gomaa’s dream to play in England (he spoke of this in the interview he gave Vital Blackburn during the summer!) so now the regular in the Egyptian side, a key performer in their African Cup of Nations winning side earlier this year must just wait and see if Hughes will follow the same path he had with Ryan Nelsen and Aaron Mokoena, having given them contracts after handing them trials and make this dream come true in January?

As we all know defence in not the main priority with Rovers at the moment, and at 31-years of age you may well be thinking he is too old but with the futures of Lucas Neill and Andy Todd likely to be away from Ewood Park, with one or both likely to leave in January that would only leave Andre Ooijer, Zurab Khizanishvili, Stephane Henchoz and Ryan Nelsen to choose from and Nelsen will only be returning in January whilst Henchoz has played little more than 90 minutes since his return to Ewood and will be unlikely to have his contract extended in the summer?

I doubt many of you know too much about Wael Gomaa but what do you think Hughes should do? Would you like to see him arrive at Ewood Park? Say what you feel below?
