In an ideal world Gary Bowyer would’ve sooner had Rudy Gestede spending the whole of pre-season with Blackburn Rovers, however, we don’t live in an ideal world do we!!

Gestede was expected to head off for International duty with Benin after the friendly with Bradford City meaning that he’d miss our continued pre-season programme, however, Bowyer was (last week) sure that he’d continue to train hard and get minutes on the pitch for Benin in their Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier with Malawi the week before the Championship season kicks off.

The Rovers Manager felt he’d “come back flying” and be ready for the season with him also sent off with a programme to follow.

Bowyer told The Lancashire Telegraph: “In an ideal world we would love to have Rudy with us but his country calls.

“The good thing is he will be playing competitive games and doing training over there. We are not worried about him missing out on anything and we will also send him away with a programme.

“He started pre-season with us, which was important for him because they were the early stages, and I’m sure he’ll come back flying.

As it now happens Gestede’s linking up with Benin is “in the balance” as illness has laid him low recently with this illness forcing him to miss the 0-0 draw with Bradford on Saturday so an assessment of his fitness will be made before permission is granted for him to set off for Africa, which might not be the best place to be going if you’re ill anyway!!
