It was expected, or at least hoped that Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Nelsen would return for the clash with Sheffield United this weekend. This will not be the case as he is set to have an operation on his troublesome hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old New Zealand international is set to fly to Europe for the operation. This will be a huge blow to Mark Hughes who has been missing his key defender. Nelsen will definitely miss both UEFA Cup legs against Salzburg as well as several more key Premiership clashes.

Nelsen has had ongoing problems with injuries, his hamstring in particular since July and it appears the problem is getting no better. Last month it was diagnosed as a torn buttock muscle, but it now seems to be again diagnosed as a hamstring problem.

Nelsen has been receiving treatment at the Brockhall training base by the Rovers medical team but it now appears they can do no more and he will fly out to be treated by one of the world’s finest specialists to try solve the problem once and for all.

The operation, which involves the reattachment of part of the torn hamstring, will take place next Tuesday in Finland due to British surgeons having little experience with this procedure. The operating surgeon has a high success rate with this operation, and all going well he could possibly return in a matter of weeks.
