Blackburn Rovers defender Christopher Samba has signed a new five-year contract to stay with Rovers until 2012.

The performances of Samba since arriving at Ewood Park (particularly this season) have earned him rave reviews, the kind of reviews that has left some worrying about where his future might lie? But he has put pen to paper on a new contract that should put to bed any lingering worries that “bigger clubs” might move for him. Obviously this doesn’t mean that they wont, but at least it puts Rovers in a stronger position if they do.

Samba told the Official Blackburn Rovers Website: “I’m very happy to extend my time at the club and look forward to keep going on with my performances.”

Rovers chairman John Williams is not only delighted to have secured the services of a man that cost less than £500,000 from Hertha Berlin in January (with him now worth at least ten times that amount?!?!) on a longer term contract, but also sees the added benefits from a financial viewpoint of doing so.

Williams said: “Chris has done exceptionally well since joining us in January and the new contract is thoroughly deserved. It’s also good business for the club securing the services of a very talented player.”

But the man who will be happiest of all with be Rovers manager Mark Hughes, who has seen his faith in signing the Congolese International rewarded with a series of top class performances, which has seen the Wall build up a formidable partnership with Ryan Nelsen, a partnership that can now flourish even more in the coming years.

Hughes added: “Chris has made a huge impact in a short time with us and is clearly a young man with a big future. We are delighted to have secured his services for the long term. He knows much hard work lies ahead but we are very confident in his ability to continue to progress.”

All in all I think it is safe to say that ALL parties are very happy to have agreed a new contract, and I doubt you will find a Rovers fan that isn’t delighted either!!!
