Savage gives blood for the cause

Blackburn Rovers’ former Welsh International Robbie Savage gave the ladies, and some gentleman for that matter a treat as helped Rovers to another win on Saturday…

Having sustained a cut nose Savage would have to strip (for the second consecutive away match it has to be added, maybe Savage is taking a shine the attention he’s being afforded!) in order to change his bloodied kit:

I covered a lot of ground against Boro and for the second away game in a row had to change my strip because it got bloodied.

I don’t mind. I give it out so I’ve got to take a few cuts here and there.”

This is good to hear (not his stripping!), it is all to often pointed out that Savage likes to dish out some “rough” treatment, maybe more than occasionally unfairly over critical but at least he admits he is able to receive what he also gives.

Following the win over Middlesbrough on Saturday, Rovers’ second successive Premiership win, their third unbeaten, and fourth unbeaten in all competitions Savage feels that this upturn in fortunes is as a result of Rovers finally finding the right attitude and tempo, and they can now build on this:

After a sticky start this team is on track again.

We were shocking at Portsmouth but gradually we’ve been getting better and better.

We went into that opening game thinking we finished sixth last season and we’re playing a team who’ve just avoided relegation. It’s a mentality thing. You try not to think that way but it can happen.

You get found out and it just shows you can’t stroll around in this league. Last year counts for nothing.

You can have the best players in the world – which we haven’t – but unless your attitude is right, you’re in trouble.

Ever since then, we’ve been working on shutting down opponents, playing with a high tempo and not giving them time on the ball. The amount of times Boro kicked the ball out was credit to how hard we worked.”

Hopefully Rovers can continue their run and make it five matches unbeaten with another win, or good enough scoring draw to see them advance at the expense of Salzburg in the UEFA Cup on Thursday night.

Savage, who would be speaking in the Daily Express, would finish with a note on his thoughts on his own current form with Rovers:

I’m probably playing my best football since I’ve been at Blackburn.

That’s because I’m doing a lot of gym work which I’ve never done before.”

This work in the gym would have been admired by his followers as he changed his blood stained kit. Adrian Chiles, BBC Two’s Match of the Day 2 presenter certainly noticed, even if he would be paying maybe too much attention to Savage’s “lady like shaven legs” Adrian’s words (or words to that effect) not mine!
