Savage Unlikely To Return

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage is unlikely to return to action this season (as had been hoped) because he is actually healing too well!

With Savage making a recovery ahead of schedule it had been hoped that he could return to play a part in the final throws of this season, including a possible FA Cup Final. However, due to the fact that he is indeed healing too well Rovers boss Mark Hughes doesn’t expect to see a return this term:

Obviously, we were hoping there was an outside chance of Robbie playing again this season,” said Hughes.

That still might be the case, but it’s probably less likely to happen now because he’s had a bit of a set-back.

He’s actually healing too well, if that is possible.”

Now comes the medical bit where Hughes explains why the healing too quickly part is bad for Savage and Rovers, as he added:

The side where the injury is has healed but when a bone heals, it heals with a bit of a bobble because of the calcification.

That has grown really well, but probably too well, because it’s irritated a different area.

It actually disperses as time goes by, but it’s causing him a problem at the moment, and that’s set him back.”

This development is a setback for Rovers and of course Savage (who has been finding it hard to come to terms with the injury) but isn’t a great surprise, even though we had hoped he could return. Even if we make the FA Cup Final it is highly unlikely that Savage will be ready as a player can’t just be thrown back into such a high profile match off the back of what may well only be a week’s training, especially after such a long injury lay off.

It’s not impossible that Savage will return, but highly improbable as Hughes explains:

It’s disappointing because we all hoped he might make himself available, and he may well still do that.

But it’s likely that he won’t be involved from now until the end of the season.

Obviously, you’d need body work leading into the game.

It’s hard to put anyone in if they’ve had a long term injury. You can’t just throw them into a one-off game – they’d need to have been back a lot earlier than a week before the last game.”
