Seniors aiming to emulate Reserves

Blackburn Rovers’ senior side will be aiming to emulate the success of its second string tonight and also win through in their own Cup-tie.

The reserve team booked their place in the second round of the Lancashire Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Blackpool on Monday night thanks to Matt Derbyshire’s fine finish just after the hour.

It was a win that Rovers had thoroughly deserved over a far more experienced Blackpool side, who included no fewer than nine first team players to Rovers’ one in goalscorer Matt Derbyshire, who himself has only very limited experience at that level.

It was a fantastic win, the boys did really well as they were up against much more experienced opposition. We’ve been playing well in recent weeks and have had some good results,” said reserve team manager Glyn Hodges after the match.

The win is Rovers’ first in the tournament since entering it, having lost to Bolton Wanderers last season and Blackpool the season before.

Although Chelsea’s all-stars in the Carling Cup are a different proposition to Blackpool in the Lancashire Senior Cup hopefully the reserves success in overcoming a much fancied opponent can rub off on the senior squad and we can overcome our opponents.

The game with Chelsea will obviously be very tough, regardless as to what team they put out but our cause hasn’t been helped with the news that Robbie Savage will almost certainly miss out with David Bentley and Andre Ooijer also struggling.
