Should Rovers have re-signed Sutton?

When Chris Sutton was a free agent he was being rumoured with a return to Blackburn Rovers. The club quickly shot down this talk and he eventually signed for Aston Villa.

The veteran striker, who won the Premiership Title with Rovers a staggering TWELVE SEASONS AGO made his first Villa start on Sunday against us, playing a prominent part in their win.

I thought Chris did very well indeed. He was out on his feet at the end of the game but he made a good contribution. He played alongside Juan Pablo, who is similar in ability in terms of holding the ball up and bringing people into play,” said Villa boss Martin O’Neill after the game.

The man working miracles at Villa Park since taking over the reigns in the summer added:

I thought Sutton played great for us. He is sore all over the place but it is his first start of the season. He had cramp everywhere.

He is very good and, if he can stay injury-free, then he will definitely be an asset from now until the end of the season.”

Having taken Sutton to Celtic, where he enjoyed much success O’Neill acted quickly to snap up the 33-year-old on a short-term contract recently and although I haven’t seen a great deal of Sutton since he linked up with Villa I have been very impressed with what I have seen.

I think the general opinion was that Sutton was too old and too injury prone to have made an impact at Ewood Park again and although I’m not sure where he would have fit in maybe we have missed a trick by not luring another player back (as we had Stephane Henchoz) on a free transfer.

Maybe Sutton could have held the ball up for Benni McCarthy and been a target man you often need in a partnership?

Should we have brought Chris Sutton back to Ewood Park when we had the chance? Have your say for or against below?

Meanwhile Belgian under-21 International Stijn Demset (that is the name being reported on Sky Sports but I’ve been lead to believe it is Stijn De Smet?) is to spend four days on trial at Ewood Park in January.

The midfielder who currently plays for Rovers’ feeder club Cercle Brugge is said to have caught Mark Hughes’ eye and the Belgian club have agreed to let him train with us in the new year which could bring a possible January transfer window move to England?
