Former Blackburn Rovers manager Graeme Souness is said to be interesting Greek giants Panathinaikos?

The Mirror newspaper is reporting that the former Rovers boss, sacked by Newcastle United last season is being tracked by Panathinaikos who are said to be “desperate” to land the Scotsman having sacked Hans Backe after a disappointing start to the season.

Souness is no stranger to the European management game having spent time with Galatasaray in Turkey for the 1995-1996 season, a short spell in Italy with Torino for the 1997-1998 season and finally a two year stint with Benfica in the Portuguese League between 1997-1999.

He won Galatasaray the Turkish Cup and Turkish Super Cup, and guided Benfica to a runners up sport in the 1997-1998 season but on the whole his time on the continent has not been a huge success, as these clubs demanded, if not expected more than they got, as would Panathinaikos.

With his overseas teams Souness would often sign British talent, several including Barry Venison and Dean Saunders when in Turkey, not all of whom would shine, in fact, all six that he brought over to Benfica, Steve Harkness (later signed again by Souness for Rovers), Gary Charles, Michael Thomas, Mark Pembridge, Dean Saunders and Brian Deane, as well as Scott Minto, who was already with the club before Souness` arrival would be discarded once he was sacked.

The newspaper also says that the man who is currently working as a pundit on Sky Sports, and has been doing so for some time has not been short of offers since leaving St James’ Park.

I’m sure that Souness would give it his all should he be offered, and indeed accept the challenge so I’d wish him well but I’m not sure he’d succeed? One thing that I would expect to see though would again several names, British and European that he’d previously worked with be line up to follow him…
