Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes is waiting to find out the full extent of Christopher Samba and Benni McCarthy’s injuries but remains confident they will be fit to play again this season.

Samba had to come off with a knee injury for the closing moments of the 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Sunday after a collision with Niko Kranjcar, but Hughes believes that it could be nothing more than an impact injury so he hopes to have him fit to face Derby County on Saturday.

Hughes told the Official Blackburn Rovers website: “He got a bang on the outside of the knee. We hope it’s just an impact injury and that he should be okay.

“If it is twisted then it could be a bigger issue for us. It’ll be sore for a couple of days, we hope that is just what it is
.”

McCarthy was forced to withdraw from that squad after tweaking his hamstring in training on Saturday, but again it is hoped he will be fit before the season ends and he will be reassessed later this week.

He added: “He just pulled up very late in the session on Saturday and has just tweaked his hamstring.

“But we are hoping that it is just a little bit of tightness in there and that he hasn’t actually pulled anything.

“So we’ll check on him this week but we are hopeful that he’ll get some of the matches that we have left.

“We want Benni fit and well, we want everyone fit and well going into these games. I’ve got to have as many options that are available to me because that obviously helps our situation
.”

It would be a bonus if one, or both were to fit but we’ll be able to manage without the Wall and Benni I feel if need be.
