Speedie: Hughes Has Worked Wonders

Former Blackburn Rovers forward David Speedie isn’t surprised Rovers boss Mark Hughes is being touted for other jobs, as he is “working wonders” with the club.

The former Rovers favourite, once of Chelsea also (among others!) feels it is little wonder Hughes’ name is being linked with various posts due to the superb job he is performing at Ewood Park.

Speculation this week, fact or fiction, has seen Hughes linked with a possible return to Stamford Bridge in the summer should Jose Mourinho decide to call it a day at Chelsea, or be told to do so. However, former Scottish International Speedie feels neither Rovers nor Chelsea have much to worry about:

Mark Hughes has worked wonders at Blackburn, in my opinion.

He’s got them playing decent football and they work tremendously hard as a team, so it’s not surprising he’s starting to get linked with big jobs elsewhere.

He’s done a fantastic job at Rovers in a relatively short space of time, and he’s done what he has without massive resources either, so I don’t see why he couldn’t be a success at a club like Chelsea“.

You wouldn’t expect a former Rovers favourite to say much less than he has, but biased opinion or not on my part it is hard to disagree with him.

He added:

But I honestly can’t see Jose Mourinho leaving this summer.

All this stuff in the papers about him falling out with the owner doesn’t seem like the case to me, certainly not based on the inside information I’ve been hearing.

When you’re successful and winning games in the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup, like Chelsea have been doing, why change your manager?

I’m sure Jose will be at Chelsea for as long as he wants, but when he does eventually leave, someone like Mark Hughes would be more than capable of taking over.”

It’s always good to hear from the legendary Speedie, especially as he makes a lot of sense with what he has said here.
