Chris Sutton has recently spoken of his “impetuous” decision to turn down an England “B” call-up eight years ago. Head Rover Heels cites this scenario as a factor in our relegation.

One of the things that got me really disillusioned this – Sutton’s snub for the England B team. I actually think that the problem with Rovers after we won the Premiership was that we were so filled with workshys that we were destined to go down.

After the industrious players that filled our ranks, all working for each other and giving everything they had no matter how limited that was (Mark Atkins being a prime example) we filled the squad with lightweight prima donnas, who wanted the glory, the fame and the wages, but didn’t want to put much effort in for it.

For me, Sutton was the prime example of this. This was one of the early turning points in footballers believing that the world owed them a living, and the reason that our England set up is so poor at the moment.

Sutton was one of the first to point out that he didn’t care about the national side or even about putting in the effort and digging in at club level all within the space of a year. By shunning the honour of playing for the national side (albeit the ‘b’ team) he proved that he didn’t want to work to gain his goals, and merely only wanted the freebies.

Pathetic! If we had shipped out the similar journeymen and freeloaders sooner, maybe we wouldn’t have been relegated.
