Long serving Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton appears to be on the verge of leaving Rovers after reports emerged that he is in advanced talks with Sydney FC to head home to the Australian A-League.

Brett has been with Rovers since 2003 and has never played for any other English side other than Blackburn but it seems that the arrival of Radosav Petrovic and Simon Vukcevic has sealed Emo’s fate as he looks set to leave.

Australian publication watoday is reporting – ‘Socceroos star Brett Emerton will officially become Sydney FC’s new marquee player today as the Sky Blues put the finishing touches to a history-making deal that makes him the first player to exchange the English Premier League for the A-League.

Emerton, 32, will leave Blackburn Rovers a year early after terminating his contract by mutual consent – but not before making what is likely to be an emotional 248th and final appearance for his only EPL club at Ewood Park against Tim Cahill’s Everton this weekend.

Emerton has signed a three-year deal to fill the Sky Blues’ second marquee spot alongside Nicky Carle after passing a medical in Manchester.’

If he is to go there is no doubting that Brett has been a superb servant to Rovers over the years.

Never one to moan or cry when things don’t go his way, he just gets on with it with a loyalty that puts a lot of other fellow pros to shame.

  • Great servant.. extremely loyal to the cause and always worked his socks off… Thankyou Brett & Good Luck for the future!!!

  • indeed one of the best servants for the club, and the move is probably the best for both parties. he’s still putting in wonderful crosses and scoring great goals, just not as often as would like. Emo will be missed!

  • Eight years – not something that happens all that often these days! Thanks for everything and all the best for the future Brett:)

  • “makes him the first player to exchange the English Premier League for the A-League”

I hate to say this, but didn’t Robbie Fowler go to Australia from Rovers first?

Anyway, Really sad to see Emo go but he’s definatley earnt it. All the best to him.

  • A great player for us, true professional, never moaned when played out of position, came back from injuries and still gave 100%. I will be very sorry to see him go. Is this the last of the Australians for rovers??

  • im from sydney, and i will be over the moon if this goes through but i really would of liked him to retire over there for you guys.

  • really sad to see Emo leave us but you can;t blame the lad wanting to go back down under to be around family and friends. the A league is getting bigger and thanks to players like Emerton and Kewell returning and players like Robbie Fowler giving it a crack the A league will look to get more domestic coverage. i certainly will try the next time im in sydney to go and see Emerton play for Sydney. I wish Emo the best of luck as he is the most genuine and polite footballer I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet and i will miss him loads :'(

  • For those aiming fingers at Venky’s and Kean – please get over yourself. emo just wants to go home and you can’t really blame him.

  • A sad day indeed. A profession player through and through. Thanks for all the hard work and commitment Brett. I do follow Sydney FC in our domestic league i would much rather have him at Rovers then at Sydney FC. A Rovers legend. Hope we can get a win for him this week.

  • A win at home would be a fitting send-off alright… Emerton to score the winner in stoppage time to send the Ewood faithful into raptures!! (Would’nt life be a lot sweeter if **** like that happened more often!!)
