The Good, The Bad & The Ugly?

Obviously this is a Blackburn Rovers site but we here at Vital Blackburn also like to think that we have a broader range and can also talk about football on a grander scale? So having seen all the weekends Premiership action at least in highlights now I’ve had my chance to sum up what I see as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

The Good – Blackburn’s draw, Mikel Arteta’s, Geremi’s & Tugay’s Goals and Shay Given’s SAVES verses Arsenal!
The good has to in a way be Rovers’ first point in sometime following the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur?

Mikel Arteta’s wonderful solo goal for Everton against Bolton Wanderers was a match winner worthy of any game. Having run from the halfway line, twisting and turning one way then another the Spaniard then riffled home an unstoppable 25-yard left footed effort.

Chelsea’s Cameroon International Geremi rolled back time to score one of his trademark free kick. His 25-yard effort flew into the top corner of West Ham United’s goal leaving Robert Green helpless.

The maestro Tugay’s stunning 25-yard volley is right up there as not only one of his best ever Blackburn Rovers goals but best ever full stop I’d say and will certainly be a contender for goal of the season. His technique was truly world-class. No goalkeeper in the world was saving that. The Turks performance (before his harsh sending off!) was also another master class.

Shay Given proved an almost unbeatable object for Arsenal on Saturday. The inspired former Rovers goalkeeper made a string of world-class saves to frustrate Arsenal before finally being beaten by Thierry Henry’s free kick. More saves were made after the goal though as Newcastle United held on for a 1-1 draw.

The Bad – Blackburn’s draw, Cristiano Ronaldo’s miss verses Sheffield United and Tugay’s red card!
The bad also has to be Rovers’ draw with Spurs! What would have been a very good point (in my opinion before the game) turned into a frustrating, if not necessarily bad one after?

With the goal literally gaping, no word of a lie as open as a book being read, somehow from six-yards out in the centre of the goal Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo managed to turn Ryan Giggs’ pull back over the bar! Luckily for him his blushes were saved somewhat as Manchester United won anyway.

Tugay’s challenge on Hossam Ghaly saw him unluckily give away a penalty, but it was a penalty nonetheless but surely a booking, if that would have been enough, but no he was given a red card! Another superb performance and world-class goal saw him denied the Man of the Match award he deserved thanks to poor officiating.

The Ugly – Phil Dowd & his friends!

This goes to Phil Dowd and his assistants!

Dowd or more his assistant attempted to ruin what remained of the Rovers – Tottenham Hotspur match with his decision to influence Dowd to show Tugay the red card for his challenge on Ghaly. A penalty and maybe a yellow would have been punishment enough for Tugay surely? Luckily the red only seemed to spur on Rovers.

Not happy that he was missing out Dowd’s other assistant then failed to give Rovers a penalty for Mido’s handball! The type of decision Rovers have seen given against them several times this season.

Dowd himself them had his moment in the spotlight as he “evened” up things when he decided to give Ghaly a straight red for what he deemed an elbow on Michael Gray. I’m still not convinced there was a lot of intent but the game was virtually finished at that point as it was deep into injury time. Dowd then appeared to send Martin Jol to the stand, something that was later denied.

So you’ve heard my take on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the latest round of Premiership games do you agree?
