The Good, The Bad & The Ugly…

Obviously this is a Blackburn Rovers site but we here at Vital Blackburn also like to think that we have a broader range and can also talk about football on a grander scale… So having seen all the weekends and midweek Premiership action at least in highlights now I’ve had my chance to sum up what I see as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly…

The Good – Blackburn Rovers winning with Shabani Nonda scoring, Reading, Keith Gillespie’s Goals, and Goalkeepers saves!
Without question the highlight of the weekend was Rovers finally winning in the Premiership after two-months of trying! What’s even better Shabani Nonda scored at last… whether or not he intended it I don’t know? I don’t really care!

Reading Football Club continue to surprise people with their quality display and the amazingly high standing in the Premiership table. I’ve said before I tipped them to stay up but to perform as they are is superb, hats off to Steve Coppell and Reading. I’m not looking forward to our trip to the Madejski later in the month…

A former Rovers player Keith Gillespie scored a stunning late winner for Sheffield United in the relegation tussle with Charlton Athletic. Similar to Tugay’s effort against Tottenham Hotspur recently in the respect that it came from a defensive clearance the Irishman watched the ball and lashed home with a superb volley from the edge of the area.

Not for the fist time this season David James gets praise from me for his saving ability. Somehow he managed to get from one end of the goal to the other in a split second as Aston Villa took a quick free kick. His superman haircut may have gone but he still flew like the pant wearing superhero! James wasn’t the only goalkeeper catching the eye, several others did including former Rovers loanee Richard Lee after several superb saves in Watford’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City. Nicky Weaver for City in the same match as well as Rovers own Brad Friedel in our defeat to Charlton Athletic made several key saves also.

The Bad – Lee McCulloch’s/Morten Gamst Pedersen’s misses, Ewood Park turnout (especially from Fulham!), Benni McCarthy’s SKINHEAD and Blackburn Rovers losing…AGAIN!

Wigan Athletics Scottish International Lee McCulloch had an afternoon to forget at the JJB Stadium on Saturday. With Wigan already 2-0 down thanks to a brace from a certain Craig Bellamy with the goal at his mercy he managed to put the ball over from close range. His misery was compounded when Steven Gerrard’s cross deflected on off him for Liverpool’s fourth in their 4-0 win.

Morten Gamst Pedersen is having a torrid time this season, he can’t finish for love nor money and is constantly under performing. Not for the first time he missed a chance that perhaps if he’d not tried to be so clever he would have scored. Attempting a Paulo Di Canio style scissor kick on the volley he got it horribly wrong. In fairness to the Norwegian he looked as though he expected the cross to be cut out but even so he should have still done better when it wasn’t.

Ewood Park was once gain barely 50% full on Sunday with Fulham themselves bringing somewhere between 150-250 supporters only.

Our South African striker, so famed for his wacky hairstyles has taken it upon himself during the coldest months of the English calendar to shave it all off! Total skinhead now greets the Rovers fans.

After taking a step forward with a win over Fulham on Saturday we took two back with yet another defeat to a team languishing in the bottom three as we lost to Charlton. Carry on like this and we’ll end up languishing in the bottom three!

The Ugly – Cristiano Ronaldo’s Diving and the White Hart Lane Brawl
Once again the highly talented and skilled Cristiano Ronaldo left himself down with his “play acting” in Manchester United’s win over Middlesbrough. Ronaldo dived to earn Man United a penalty from which they scored then threw himself to the ground again to earn a free kick. Both times he looked smugly pleased with his efforts. By keeping on doing this he detracts from the ability he clearly has.

After an altercation involving Tottenham Hotspur’s Aaron Lennon and Middlesbrough’s George Boateng a mass brawl ensued involving all twenty-two on the players on the pitch at the time. The result saw red cards for Boateng and Spurs’ Didier Zokora.

So you’ve heard my take on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly for the latest round of Premiership games (weekend and midweek) do you agree?
