The Good, The Bad & The Ugly?

It’s been a while since we’ve seen this feature, but it’s back! The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Obviously this is a Blackburn Rovers site but we here at Vital Blackburn also like to think that we have a broader range and can also talk about football on a grander scale. So having seen all the weekends Premiership action at least in highlights now I’ve had my chance to sum up what I see as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

The Good – Blackburn Rovers winning, the crowds reaction to the mourning of an English Legend (Alan Ball) & Dimitar Berbatov’s goal!
It goes without saying that Rovers winning is ALWAYS a good thing, the 4-1 win (although not a classic by any means) over Charlton Athletic was no exception.

The weekend saw grounds around the country pay their respects to an English Legend who was sadly lost last week, this man was of course Alan Ball. ALL clubs showed a great level of respect to the England World Cup Winner who sadly became only the second member of the Winning side (Bobby Moore previously) in passing.

Bulgarian International Berbatov is proving a MASSIVE hit this season with Tottenham Hotspur and the Premiership on the whole. He again displayed another touch of World-Class quality with his goal against Middlesbrough. As the ball fell to him some 25-yards out he launched into an acrobatic volley to curl home leaving Mark Schwarzer WELL beaten.

The Bad – Ben Thatcher, Iain Turner’s goalkeeping, West Ham United “only” being finned & Fat Sam’s timing in leaving Bolton Wanderers!
What is it with Thatcher? He just can’t seem to control himself can he! Thatcher had been booked in the first half then with his side desperately looking from something from the game (1-0 down at the time) he went and produced a crude and reckless challenge that saw him pick up ANOTHER red card! Charlton soon equalised but a man light eventually lost 4-1.

With Tim Howard unable to face Manchester United due to being on loan to Everton from them they had to make a change. In came Iain Turner and his howler gave Manure a route back into the game. 2-0 down at the time Turner somehow contrived to let a routine claim from a corner escape his grasp and John O’Shea made no mistake.

Technically in the week prior to the games but the fact that West Ham “only” picked up a £5.5 million fine instead of a points penalty one made their victory over Wigan Athletic all the more important. Should the Hammered stay up as a result of not picking up a points penalty I’m sure MANY clubs, including the one that went down as a result, which could eventually be Wigan will have plenty to say. I know the rules that Middlesbrough and the Hammered broke were different but Middlesbrough received a point’s penalty which ultimately resulted in their relegation, a monetary penalty has caused the Hammered problems but if they stay up this will be made up EASILY.

So fat Sam finally decided it was time for Bolton and himself to part ways. He has done a great job with Bolton no matter what people think, and maybe he had taken them as far as he could but SURELY with only two games to go he should have seen out the season?!?!

The Ugly – Blackburn/Charlton defending for most goals & Phil Neville’s own goal!
The defending from Rovers and Charlton meant that several of the games goals were scored as a result. Scott Carson somehow allowed Jason Roberts’ effort to squirm beneath his grasp when straight at him, and what Stephen Warnock was thinking when he headed against his OWN bar before Darren Bent equalised I still don’t know! Maybe Herman Hreidarsson was a little unlucky for his own goal as we took the lead again, but the defending that allowed us to score our third (despite some classy footwork from Benni McCarthy) has to be a reason Charlton are in their current plight?

If I thought Stevie Warnock’s play when heading against his own bar was unorthodox what Phil Neville had going through his head when he somehow put through his own net for Manure’s equaliser was shocking. What should have been a fairly simple and comfortable clearance ended up in the back of his own net!
