Alan Shearer has, this evening ‘politely declined’ the opportunity to be included on John Williams’ shortlist for the vacant Blackburn manager’s post.

During the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2008, Gary Lineker asked Shearer, a former Premier League winner with Rovers, the position regarding the post.

Shearer admitted that John Williams had been in touch regarding the job and had asked Shearer if he would like to be included on the shortlist drawn up to be Mark Hughes’ successor at Ewood Park.

Shearer said….

‘The situation was, and is, that I was very flattered to have got a call from the chief executive, John Williams, at Blackburn.

‘He asked me if I would like to be included on a shortlist for the manager’s job, which I politely declined because of the commitments that I have, namely this one.

‘I was very flattered to have been asked and I thank him for that.

‘He has made two great decisions in his last two decisions for the managers, and I am sure he will go on and make a third one, and I wish him good luck.’

Hopefully now, Rovers can move on and stop living in the past and appoint a candidate that has managerial experience AND take the club forward.

I firmly believe that Shearer, had he been ‘that’ interested in management, would’ve taken this opportunity as Rovers would have been a very good position for him for his first job but the excuse of BBC commitments seem a weak excuse, if indeed he wants to be a manager.

Either way, we can put the nostalgic twinges on the back burner now and look forward to what should be an exciting week for all Rovers fans.
