The Next Move Is Critical

With it being a slow news day I was thinking about what we are looking at for this summers transfer business and came to the very abrupt conclusion that bar 2 strikers we could actually be done for this window.

Right back, check. Midfield youth, check. Bit of pace, check. Gael Givet, check.

But the next buy is the most important one. For all the little trimmings and extras added to the squad what we really need is a regular stream of goals. Roque has gone and City have sent us a rather ludicrous amount of money back in our direction – £13 million of which Sam can spend.

Now rather than speculate over who or what we are going to buy I am going to assure everyone of this… How good this new hitman is will determine where we finish in the league.

If he flops we could be up the creek without a paddle this time. However, if he is a poacher who fires in 15+ Premier League goals then the season could be a memorable one for us all. We could muster all the bargains in the world but we need something that you can’t get on the cheap, for someone to hit the onion bag.

The support play of Benni McCarthy and I might add more importantly Jason Roberts is in place to back up the main guy with 15 odd goals between the two of them. Whilst we are on the subject of Roberts for all his faults he is actually an excellent supplier of goals – he is paid to score them but the reason he has hung round with Rovers and is so popular with every boss is because his strength and pace help the team – a striker who is a goalscorer would love to play alongside Roberts.

With the defence now sorted with a likely first choice line up across the back of Emerton, Samba, the mighty Nelsen and Givet and tactics in place so that we are solid at the back with the players we have we should not have many problems picking up draws on the road and a few at home but for us to really push on into the top half those one point hauls need to be turned into ‘three pointers’.

We need a man that will pop up with that winner in the last five minutes, that guy that you can always look to when you are having a bad game as a team to do that something special.

Three seasons ago that man was Benni McCarthy. Two seasons ago it was Roque Santa Cruz. Last season we really didn’t have one. This was the reason in my eyes we were in trouble regardless of all Ince’s problems – having a man to stick his neck on the line and turn the tide when things weren’t going well.

Sam this next buy is the BIG ONE – and I think he knows it.
