The Race To Europe

Earlier this week, we were officialy ruled out of having any mathematical chance of winning the premiership. On the realistic side, we are in a dogfight for the coveted 6th position.

6th is normally the second of the UEFA Cup qualification spots, however, with results panning out indifferently in the FA and League Cups, 6th spot is now the Intertoto position.

With all the teams around us competing this weekend, it was important for us to claim maximum points against Wigan. And this we did, taking us up to 49 points. Starting in 6th spot, Portsmouth were defeated by Tottenham, 2-0. Aston Villa followed, losing to Sunderland 1-0. Man City could not edge out local Rivals Bolton, drawing at 0-0. The last of the European contenders can almost be ruled out now, with our bogey team, West Ham managing a draw against Everton.

This leaves only a solitary point seperating 6th to 9th with

5) Everton 57
6) Portsmouth 50
7) Aston Villa 49
8) Blackburn 49
9) Manchester City 49
10)West Ham 44

Very tight in the race for Europe, however the Footballing Gods where definatily shining on Blackburn this week.

Looking forward to the next round of games

Portsmouth have a home encounter against our latest victims, Wigan.
Aston Villa face the daunting task of travelling to Old Trafford and facing Man U
Mancherster City travel to relegation threatened Birmingham.
West Ham travel to Sunderland who will be confident after the victory against Villa.

As for us, we are of to the Madejski stadium with an important clash against Reading who beat Birmingham 2-1.
