VB Winners and Losers

Hello boys and girls, it feels like a more happy monday after the game at weekend and the confidence is back in the Ewood Park contingent after an impressive 3-1 win at home to Wolves.

For VB winners and losers we pick three Rovers players that had a good day out in the latest game and three that need to put in more of a shift.

Lets see who did what, how and why this week…

WINNERS

DAVID DUNN – deployed ‘in the hole’ behind the work horse but goal shy Jason Roberts seems to have done the trick with the injury prone Dunn. On Saturday against Wolves he was simply outstanding. People may moan that the 4-5-1 may not be the way forward when you are at home but with the untried Franco Di Santo, the unfit Nikola Kalinic and the injured and often burger enticed Benni McCarthy the other options – Dunn is the best option at present.

On the whole, Dunn was creative, strong and a willing worker. In short he was the focal point of everything good that Rovers did on the attack. As one VBer recently said, if Dunny stays fit for twenty games, we will steer clear of trouble. If he stays fit for thirty games we can have a crack at Europe.

Casual fans laugh at this but that is about the size of it, he is that influential. Dave Dunn – Blackburns best player.

EL HADJI DIOUF – I have mentioned Morten in a recent piece so I have avoided him this time but on the other flank the man everyone loves to hate put in a great shift.

He has left the free kick and corner taking to Dunn and Pedersen and has concentrated on his strengths, namely getting on the ball and getting into good positions to maximise his effectiveness.

He even chipped in with a goal as well as he latched onto a defensive error to bag his first Ewood Park goal for Rovers.

He will need to raise his game as well as Brett Emerton is back and rarely misses a beat for the Blue and White Army – Dioufs real challenge starts now.

VINCE GRELLA – One of the sides unsung heroes on Saturday. During the final twwnty minutes Rovers turned on the style with victory secured and players such as Diouf, Chimbonda and the already legendary Salgado lapped it up.

But the man who created the platform for all this to happen was in the middle doing what he does best.

Strong tackles, aggressive play and an improved range of passing on last season has shown why he cost £4 million from Torino last summer.

More of this and he will be difficult to shift from this position.

LOSERS

PAUL ROBINSON – I must by saying it was very difficult to REALLY criticise anyone on Saturday as no-one had a shocker but I am going to nit pick – something Bom Bom would normally do more than me (sorry mate!).

Robinson has been in the form of his life the last six months but on Saturday he stuttered a bit, particularly in the crossing department. He looked lost with a few crosses and nearly cost us a goal in the second half with a poor attempt at a punch from a looped cross.

It may well have been the sun in his eyes but a cap would of sorted that!

It was probably just a blip from the now reliable Robbo but for a shaky effort he deserves a quick stint in the losers section.

KEITH ANDREWS – Good running, improved passing and some good positioning – why is Keith in here?

In short he missed too many chances! Four efforts were presented to Keith and two scuffs and two efforts he should of done better with meant Rovers could of had the game in the bag earlier than they did.

He has come along way from the man who was universally slammed last season but if he really wants to kick it up a notch then he needs to embrace the role of the ‘late run into the box’ midfielder by bagging at least 7 goals this season.

Keith you have been set a challenge my friend.

STEVEN REID – Fit but not used at all in the squad. With the emerging talents of Grella, Andrews, the awesomeness of Dunn and the ability to use Emo and Salgado in the middle – will Reid be the odd man out in the squad jigsaw?
