Hello all and welcome to the first edition of winners and losers for the 2009/10 season.

Each week I break down the players who excelled during the weekend games and those that really need to step it up a notch.

Feedback is as always welcome and let me know your own thoughts on who deserves a mention.

After the 2-0 loss to Manchester City in a brave, strong but ultimately killer instinctless performance there is plenty to round up – so without further a do lets get cracking!

WINNERS

Morten Gamst Pedersen –
After a summer of mocking and laughing at his attitude and his woeful, under developed performances this season is pretty much make or break for the super talented but under achieving Norwegian.

And on the basis of Saturday we can all safely say one thing – that’s more like it!

Cutting runs, a willingness to get on the ball and make things happen and most importantly, the ability to fight for the team. It was all there and it hasn’t been evident in Morten for a while.

None of the poor attitude and complacency wsa there. He played as though he knows a sting of poor showings could see Elrio Van Heerden or Aaron Doran step into his spot.

Please Morten, do not let this drop as you are onto a good thing playing like that.

Steven N’Zonzi –He wasn’t even supposed to be playing but a special mention must go to the young new guy.

Injuries to David Dunn, Steven Reid, Brett Emerton and Vine Grella as well as captain Nelsen at the back meant that SAm had no choice but to play the boy who cost £400,000 from recently relegated FC Amiens.

The level of performance he reached was way above what was expected and he played almost a steadying and harrying role which allowed EHD and MGP to be more creative on the flanks.

He will get better and yes, he is not the finished article by any means but this was a good start – we could have an absolute bargain in the tall N’Zonzi.

Lars Jacobsen –Good god how Everton could of done with a fit Lars Jacobsen against Arsenal. It has become fairly apparent already that the Dane is a top eight right back that gets injured too much.

A real steadying influence at the back that showed why Rovers have missed a genuine, specialist right back for all this time. He limited Robinho to a peripheral influence and got forward a fair bit as well.

Keep this man fit and we have got a bosman bargain.

LOSERS

Jason Roberts –
I must start off by saying that nobody had a bad game as it was a good team effort so this week I am going to be picking on players and areas of improvement.

Roberts had his standard game of being strong, holding up play well and bringing others into the game whilst having a good run at the impressive Richard Dunne sporadically.

But he really need some extra training on THAT SHOOTING. Several times we could of turned around and said the phrase ‘if that was Benni McCarthy and not Jason Roberts in that position it would have been on target’.

Any chance we can get Benni and Jason to run into each other at full speed and create a super striker?!

El Hadji Diouf –I’ll keep this short, for the love of good stop trying to be so tricky on the ball and concentrate on being the creative force you can be.

Sometimes less is more and EHD is sometimes a frustrating epitomy of this.

Paul Gallagher – All those injuries to the side and he is used in his third choice position as a sub and his only meaningful contribution is to get booked.

I like the guy but you get the feeling that the clock is ticking…
