Derby would have hoped to go into the meeting with QPR on Friday with a promotion bid in mind but the Rams are currently playing for a top 10 finish. The R’s would draw level on points with their host should they record a fourth win to extend the unbeaten run to five.
The lunchtime kick off on Saturday will see Barnsley aiming to derail Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday’s play-off bid. Having won just once in the last 10 the Tykes have dropped out of the top 10 with the Owls knowing a victory would insure they maintain sixth spot whatever the other results later in the day.
Should Aston Villa manage a sixth win in seven they could break into the top 10. Norwich’s play-off bid appeared to be over but the Canaries could close the five points between them and Sheffield Wednesday – if they drop points – with a victory at Villa Park.
Brentford have designs on a top 10 finish and these chances would be boosted with a win against relegation threatened Bristol City. The Robins head to Griffin Park in 19th place on the back of a four game unbeaten run – winning the last two – a point clear of the bottom three
Defeat against Leeds heading into the international break saw Brighton miss the chance to overtake leaders Newcastle. Albion will look for improved form – having lost three of the last five – against bottom three side Blackburn to keep the automatic promotion bid in their hands. Rovers are unbeaten in seven but just the two wins in this spell means they’re a point from safety.
Huddersfield’s loss going into the break saw the chance to close the gap on second place Brighton to three points missed. Town will look for a positive reaction against Burton at the John Smith’s Stadium. The Brewers also lost – a first defeat in seven – a couple of weeks back and are just a point and a place above the bottom three.
After a first defeat in nine Ipswich are at risk of being drawn back into a relegation battle. This is something Birmingham would also be involved in as they’re below the Tractor Boys on goal difference – both clubs are just five points above the relegation zone.
Many would expect Newcastle to record a first win in four when the Championship leaders host second bottom Wigan at St James’ Park. However, the Latics are in desperate need of the points as they’re seven points from safety.
Preston still have an outside chance of a top six finish – the gap to Sheffield Wednesday is five points – but in order to keep this on track North End would need to see off Nottingham Forest. Mark Warburton drew his first game in charge of Forest but they head to Deepdale just a point above Blackburn, who hold the final relegation spot.
Relegation will be mathematically confirmed for Rotherham if they can’t record a win over Fulham. Having lost nine of the last 10 the signs aren’t good for the Millers against the promotion chasing Cottagers – they are a point and a place behind Sheffield Wednesday heading into the weekend.
Wolves four game unbeaten run – including three successive wins – has taken them five points clear of trouble ahead of Cardiff’s visit. The Bluebirds – four unbeaten – could move into the top 10 with a Molineux win and other results going for them.
The late kick off will see play-off rivals Reading and Leeds go head to head at the Madejski Stadium. Victory for the Royals and they’ll go above the Whites into fourth but a win for the visitors and they could move above Huddersfield into third.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
