Blackburn’s Capital One Cup run is over for another year after an upset defeat at Ewood Park against Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

It shouldn’t really be too much of a surprise as Rovers have lost to lower league, in fact League 1 opposition, in the last three-matches played in the League Cup following this two-one defeat.

James Collins had given the visitors an early lead only for Liam Lawrence to put through his own net to make it one-one but the winner came minutes later through Tyrone Barnett.

What would have been a great moment for teenager Ryan Nyambe, who hopes are high for following his signing of a long-term contract in the summer, when he made his debut turned sour when his mistake allowed Ogogo in. Steele saved his effort but Collins (9) scored the rebound to put Shrewsbury ahead early on.

Shrewsbury could have had a penalty for a possible Steele foul on Ogogo but the Rovers ‘keeper got away with it.

Nyambe played his part in getting Blackburn level when his cross was deflected past his own ‘keeper Leutwiler but former Ireland international Lawrence (30) on the half hour mark but this relief didn’t last long as two-minutes later Barnett (32) pick up a loose ball 20-yards out to beat Steele again.

Leutwiler made a fine save to keep out Marshall from distance and Koita twice went close with headers after coming off the bench but Rovers couldn’t find an equaliser as they bowed out of the League Cup for another year to ‘concentrate on the league’….at least until the FA Cup in January!
