Blackburn’s Championship season, and of course the Paul Lambert era – this ‘began’, continued with a win at Deepdale against Preston on Saturday.

An own goal from Preston’s previously unbeaten ‘keeper Pickford had Blackburn ahead with a penalty from Rhodes giving Rovers some breathing space, the home side pulled one back through Garner but it wasn’t enough to prevent a two-one win to see Lambert began with a win!

With Leicester loanee Lawrence off the field, injured, Blackburn were ahead when ironically enough Pickford (31) became the first person to beat himself in the Preston goal after six straight cleansheets!

Rovers had hit the post but after a goalmouth scramble the ‘keeper scored an own goal as Pickford diverted an Akpan effort into the back of the net.

A one-nil lead was something Blackburn were able to take into the half time break.

The second half couldn’t have started any better a chance to extend the lead came early on when Preston defender Huntington brought down Taylor in the box with Rhodes (51), as he often if, clinical from the penalty spot to grad that – as it proved to be – decisive second goal!

Preston had renewed hope at the midway point of the second have when Garner (67), formerly a Blackburn player, pulled one back for the hosts but when Wright was sent off for his second yellow card soon after this meant the Lilywhites had to play out the game with 10-men and this made a job harder.

This winning start for Lambert saw Blackburn up to 13th, which he’ll hope is lucky for him, and some five-points ahead of the relegation places but, more importantly as this is what Rovers will be aiming for, eight-points off the top six….

A gap he’ll be ‘expected’ to close in the coming weeks and months!
