Blackburn Rovers have completed the signing of free agent Johann Vogel.

The 31-year-old was released by Real Betis in December 2007, and has been a free agent since. He came to Ewood Park at the beginning of March to undergo a trial and after impressing Mark Hughes he has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, with the option of a further year.

Swiss International Vogel has played for Grasshoppers, PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan (as well as Betis) in his distinguished career and now tries his hand in England for the first time, although he was linked with Manchester United and Everton a few years back.

A legal dispute with Betis made the midfielder a free agent, and Rovers have beaten off reported interest from Sunderland to sign the star, who will be hoping to play in the European Championships in the summer, which are jointly hosted by his home nation Switzerland.
