Where are the Goals????

sasman asks where have the simple, basic dare I say it even easy goals gone? What is the problem with Blackburn Rovers?

Over the past few weeks something has caught my attention. Where are the boring old goals, the tap ins, the headers from crosses, one two passes leading to goals, where are the through balls to our strikers, who then finish one on ones?

This is the major problem as to why we are not winning. Most of our recent goals have been spectacular efforts from outside the box, or set pieces. Whilst you might think a goal is a goal, these goals do not occur frequently. What should occur frequently is the tap in goals, the one on one goals and the headers from crosses.

So what is the problem? Is it distribution of the ball to our strikers. Is it poor finishing from our strikers when opportunities do arise, or is it the simple fact that we just cannot score in the box!

If my stats are right, half of our goals have come from players other then strikers whilst 30% of our goals are from outside the box. This percentage is high, indicating the lack of goals from inside the box. We are not finishing the simple goals or we are not making the chances for the simple boring tap in goals. These are the goals that should appear regularly, goals we are missing out on.

Whilst we have seen glimpses of class from our forwards, I feel there is a lack of connection between the forwards and the midfielders. We are missing a spark, regrettably, a spark that disappeared with the forced sale of Craig Bellamy. Whilst we initially thought our recruits would cover for this loss, it is now obvious that we have not covered for the loss of Bellamy.

Now we shouldn’t look back and say only if the clause was not included, we should look forward and scout the market before the window opens. Options should be looked at thoroughly as we do not have the money to waste on flops. The January transfer period could decide the future of the club, hopefully, we make key signings and the goals start coming.
