Could an extended run in the UEFA Cup for Blackburn Rovers convince current captain Lucas Neill that his future indeed lays at Ewood Park? Brad Friedel certainly hopes so.

Chairman John William and manager Mark Hughes have both stated their intent to keep him, with a fresh contract waiting in the offering. Rovers goalkeeper Friedel is one of many hoping that he will indeed agree to stay:

It’s extremely important to keep Lucas.

If we can hold on to him it would be great for all of us. He would be hard to replace.

Lucas is a good guy, he’s got a level head on him and works ever so hard.

We’ve never had any trouble with him or any drop in form. He just gets on with it. He is a leader on and off the pitch.

Lucas has to think of himself and his family, but we are hoping that a good run in Europe and the Premier League will do something to make him think about his future.”

Will an extended run in Europe convince the Australian to remain at Ewood Park? Only time will tell…
