Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has confirmed that we did try to keep Carlos Villanueva at Ewood Park before his move to Al Shabab was confirmed.

The 23-year-old had spoken more than once about his desire to stay with Rovers, however, with good money offered to Audax Italiano from the Dubai based club (with good wages too) Rovers couldn’t compete with this. Williams has confirmed that we did want to keep Villanueva on loan at Ewood again next season but this wasn’t possible.

Williams told Setanta Sports: “Sam did not feel we could commit for a permanent transfer after the season Carlos has had. From getting chicken pox early on to the scrap we have had on our hands since.

“The general feeling is the type of football he played was not relevant to the position we have been in. We have been fighting for our lives.

“We did ask if we could extend the loan by another year but Audax wanted to sell him and so that was that.

It would’ve been good if we could’ve had the Chilean on loan again next season as I’m sure that Sam Allardyce would’ve used the midfielder much more next season but it wasn’t meant to be.
