Barnsley failed with a January approach for Connor Mahoney according to the Sun, which will see them return in the summer,

Mahoney’s Blackburn contract expires at the end of the season with it reported he’s ‘unlikely’ to sign a new deal to extend his stay at Ewood Park.

A bid from Championship rivals Barnsley was reportedly viewed as ‘too low’ so was therefore turned down by Blackburn. However, they’ll return with a summer bid when Paul Heckingbottom is expected to sign the winger.

The 19 year old academy graduate Mahoney – who I imagine probably would have anticipated a great level of involvement than he’s seen under Owen Coyle – would command a compensation fee said to be around £150,000.

Sam Gallagher will of course leave Blackburn in the summer too at the end of his season-long loan deal from Southampton. His long-term future might not be with the Saints but isn’t going to be with Rovers either.

Interest in Gallagher – the added time match winner against QPR on Saturday – was claimed from this same Sun report from Sunderland last month with the 21 year old scouted on more than once occasion.

David Moyes apparently wanted Southampton to end his loan deal with Blackburn so he could take him on loan to Sunderland. This might have happened but for his advisers who talked Gallagher into seeing out his Rovers loan spell as this was seen as the better option at the time.
