Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce discusses his thoughts on our defeat at Liverpool on Sunday with Sky Sports.

Keith Andrews’ penalty cancelled out Steven Gerrard’s opener but no sooner had we finished celebrating that Liverpool had taken the lead against through Fernando Torres and 2-1 is how it finished at Anfield. Allardyce feels that it’s that difference in quality in the attacking third that made the difference in this match as we didn’t have someone that was able to take the chances created.

Allardyce told Sky Sports: “If we had a goalscorer we would have won, it is that simple. Chances came and went and we didn’t convert them and unusually we had more chances than Liverpool today.

“But because we failed to convert them and they have Torres and Gerrard, who are superb finishers and superb players, and that is the difference and they made us pay and it is a great shame for the players with the effort they put in and the football they played and the chances they created.

“We can moan about the defending but the quality of their players is what Liverpool are about and why they are at the top of the league most seasons and we didn’t have that, so sadly we have not managed to get the result we deserve.

“Even at half-time when we were 2-1 down I felt we were still going to get a result. Certainly we had enough of the lion’s share of the play in the second half to get that equaliser but in front of goal we are not good enough at the moment, especially away from home.

Rafael Benitez has complained about our bully boy tactics and feels that we should’ve had at least one player sent off, however, Big Sam feels that it’s more down to the home fans influencing referee and that’s what happened with Alan Wiley and why he gave so many fouls against us and issued some many yellow cards.

He added: “They are very, very good here at swaying people’s decision making process that’s what the crowd are good at and the Liverpool team for many, many years have been very, very good at it.

“Our frustration is that we have been deemed to have committed 25 fouls and five bookings and that is totally against the run of play when you look at the other stats and that is the disappointing thing for me.

Personally (as much as it’s been difficult for Big Sam to bring in players in many ways) can he really complain that much about not having a proven goalscorer when he’d been so unwilling to give the one that we did have any real run in the team and instead sold him in January without replacing him?? I’m talking about Benni McCarthy. It probably was the right time overall for everyone involved for a fresh start but the South African hadn’t been given much chance under Big Sam during his time with us and no matter what we think of the striker he is a proven goalscorer!!
