For sometime now we’ve been trying to put together what we feel is the Greatest Ever Blackburn Rovers Squad. This has been selected but now is time for a recap and in some cases a re-evaluation.

This recap will entail us going through the positions, looking at those already selected and deciding are “they really worthy of their place in the Greatest Ever Rovers Squad?

This squad comprises of:

3 Goalkeepers

2 Left-backs (or Wing-backs)
4 Centre-backs
2 Right-backs (or Wing-backs)

2 Left-midfielders (or Wingers)
4 Central Midfielders
2 Right-midfielders (or Wingers)

4 Forwards

When we looked at the central midfielders first time round, these six men were the men with the most mentions, and hence they made the poll.

Ronnie Clayton
Gordon Cowans
Howard Kendall
Eddie Latheron
Tim Sherwood

From these six the following four were selected.

Ronnie Clayton (18%)
Howard Kendall (14%)
Eddie Latheron (14%) &
Tugay (41%)

So what do we do next?
Next we will go over the positional selections and once we have these positional placing selected to a level the majority agree on (not all will, but the majority will speak and be heard? hopefully!) we will start selecting the Greatest XI!

How do we review this?
Quite simple, YOU look at the people who have been brought into the squad, if you are not happy you mention the name in the comments section below for the name you think should come out and put forward the name (PLEASE NOTE – This doesn’t have to come from the original six mentioned!) you thought should come in (ideally why in both instances!)

From the names put forward to come in, and those to go out we should have a majority voicing their fair and honest opinion more fairly than a poll for this process. In a poll you just select a name, in some cases maybe that you like, by asking you to comment you mention a name with a reason why!

What happens if no one comments?
Quite simply if no one comments then no one comes in or out of the Squad and we’ll select a keeper for the Greatest XI from what we already have.

I DO NOT want this re-selection process to go to a vote, I want this process decided by the majority through your comments. People have no excuse to moan or be unhappy about who is and who isn’t in if they will not debate (not argue!) their point. In a split decision we will, well we will cross that bridge if and when it comes to it!

It’s a lot simpler than it may seem!
So simply leave the name(s) below for who you think should go out and add the name for the player that you think should come in, all ideally with reasons. This doesn’t need to be fully detailed but some reasoning would help.

Things can and will change over time
Do remember the squad can and will be changed over time at your request. This is a long running process as hopefully I will be around this site for YEARS to come, as will you?

Once we have decided (to the majority, not minority I’m afraid) we will have a finalised squad and then select a Greatest XI (this will go to a vote though!) I will reveal how the “appeals” process for change will happen once we fully finish this project.

So what are you waiting for?
You know what to do, have your say below. This re-evaluation process will run for a maximum of a week, this should give people plenty of time to have their say. If you don’t the true Greats (again I’m not saying those already selected aren’t, I’m not looking to sway opinion within this article, will do this below LOL!) could miss out, then who will be to blame? Without wanting to be harsh you, the Vital Blackburn members will as you would not have voiced your opinion?

Don’t forget the forum, you can talk about whatever you want there and YOU decide what it is! Forum Link.

  • Others that gained mentions last time but failed to make the vote were: Steve Archibald, Ossie Ardiles, David Batty, David Dunn, Jimmy Forrest, Duncan McKenzie, Eddie Quigley, Colin Randell, Steven Reid & Robbie Savage.

  • Although I feel Tugay has RIGHTLY made the Greatest Squad I feel his 41% winning vote was FAR too high. I’m MORE that happy for Ronnie Clayton, Eddie Latheron & Tugay to stay, so I retain these three on my part. As much as I rated Kendall, his best years were with Everton no two ways about it, arguably a great but not great enough for this squad for me. I had an ongoing debate with BomBom in the forum on Jimmy Forrest click here and although I still believe that success doesn’t necessarily make you great (look at Shearer for example, ONE winners medal in his career but still one of Southampton’s, Rovers’, Newcastle’s, England’s, Europe’s if not the World’s Greatest EVER forwards) Forrest is more than worthy of a place in this squad. A local lad who gave EVERYTHING to this club and won so much. So my selections are RONNIE CLAYTON, EDDIE LATHERON, TUGAY & JIMMY FORREST.

  • You’d be surprised gunnerb, not too many of that team are in the squad. Obviously some are but not all. So far we only have a couple from that squad, although a couple more probably will be in by the end.

  • My 4, Jimmy Forrest, Eddie Latheron, Ronnie Clayton and yeah, probably Tugay. He has been a great player for us and was a very sucessful player prior to us, after all, you dont get 92 caps for your country by being average do you?

  • Well I totally agree with you so we can’t even debate on this can we. It’s looking like the four we selected are going to be the four that get in. COME ON PEOPLE, say what you feel 🙂

  • Majority has to rule MickeyGamst and is doesn’t look like ruling in favour of him I’m afraid?!?!

  • This selection process WILL be ending maybe Thursday, Friday at the latest so if ANYONE has anything further to add on this matter NOW is the time or you miss out.

  • Of the topic guys, i no im gettin desperate but i have been wodering. If liverpool win the champions league, does that mean all the europ spaces will drop another position. I mean would bolton if they finish 5th then replace liverpool for the qualification stage, eventually meaning that 1 and 2 straight to champs league, 3 (liverpool auto qualify if they win), 4 and 5 qualification champs league, 6,7, eufa cup, 8th gets the fa cup eufa cup spot and 9th will get intertoto???

  • Comon all you england blackburn supporters, wake up let me no if we get intertoto for 9th spot. Hehehehe. I wanna sleep lol.

  • It won’t work like that sasman I’m afraid. We’ll have to finish seventh (at least) or above Tottenham if we both outside of the top seven.

  • Fraid so – The 5 champs league places was only given because liverpool moaned so much – They put regulations in place to ensure no more than 4 from each country is eligible, no matter what happens now.

  • It was a scenario UEFA never feared seeing wasn’t it, they messed their pants when it did! Do you have anything to add on the Greatest Squad Head Rover Heel or ANYONE else for that matter?!?! Time is running out with the central midfield re-evaluation almost at an end.

  • I was going to stay out of this one – We have too many from the past that i know little about, and would have basically been choosing from the information provided by others on here – not the best way to go about it as i’d only be doubling someone’s personal preference. Haven’t had time to do my own background research. I’ll be back in on the next one.

  • Midfielder of the Month for April? (Quick-fire 24-hour Poll!)
