Blackburn Rovers Manager Mark Hughes has voiced his concerns over the toughness of football boots these days, as he fears that they are not as tough as they used to be, which is leading to more injuries.
Hughes is concerned that the manufacturers of boots have no footballing background (although the inventor of the Adidas Predator boots was former Liverpool footballer Craig Johnston) so they don’t understand how the game is played, and how designing them purely as “fashion objects” is causing more of the foot injuries that are being sustained now.
Manchester United and England International Wayne Rooney became the latest to suffer a foot injury didn’t he, when he AGAIN damaged his foot at the weekend.
Sparky said (in quotes token from TEAMTalk.com): “It is a worry and something we need to look at.
“The boots are designed by people who have not played the game and do not know the intensity of how it is played.
“The vast majority of boots when I played were leather with laces down the middle.
“Now the laces are on the back, the side and underneath, all over the place.
“Some of the materials that are being used do not seem to be of the correct solidity or substance as there have been a lot of injuries.”
