Wednesday evening will mark the highest point of an already highly successful 2006 so far for Steven Reid when he leads the Republic of Ireland for the first time. The Rovers midfielder has been appointed captain by Ireland boss Steve Staunton for the friendly with Holland.

With Reid being inspirational in Rovers` sixth place finish last season, seeing him linked with the likes Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, he would decide to remain at Ewood Park signing a new contract. So the latest high in a series of highs in 2006 will not only see him win his 19th cap, but he will also captain his country for the first time at Lansdowne Road tonight.

Having already spoken of his desire to make a starting birth his own, with former International team mate Steve Staunton handing Reid the armband ahead of more experienced men in the absence of regular skipper Robbie Keane, and understudy Shay Given it would appear that Staunton, having already played Reid for the full 90 minutes of his first two games in charge is very keen himself to see him a regular also.

It’s a big step up to captain the national team, but with the faith that has been shown in me, there comes confidence,” Reid would say of his appointment.

Also going onto add

I thought it might happen at some point in my career. It’s just come a bit quicker than I and a lot of other people probably thought,”

Reid is looking to make the most of this opportunity in a bid to lead his country again in the future

But if I do a good job, then somewhere down the line there might be another possibility.”

We all will wish him the best of luck.
