Opportunity Knocks

Wasn’t that, ‘opportunity knocks’, a game show, TV show or talent show in the 70s or 80s?

Anyway…. Gary Bowyer said on the Official Website, going into the Millwall game on Tuesday, that he was going to ‘run the rule’ over his ‘keepers in the final three-matches of the season, giving each the chance to stake a claim for next season.

Jason Steele had been a mainstay most of the time since his arrival from Middlesbrough, initially on loan in a move that became permanent in January but these final games will see Bowyer look at all three, something that he says all are well aware of with Simon Eastwood having had the chance most recently.

‘I want to have a look again at David Raya, so he will feature at some point in the next three games.

‘Jason Steele has been very good, he’s understood that Simon Eastwood played in the cup and straight away he was back in.

‘He also understood that we wanted to have a closer look at Easty over the last couple of games. Easty has only played in one game that we’ve lost and that was Liverpool. So from his point of view the record stands ever so good for him.’

David Raya has quietly gone about his business as his development has continued, having impressed in the U21 side and whilst out on loan he got his chance to make his senior Blackburn debut against Leeds recently, and took it.

Training well with the first-team sees him ‘breathing down their neck’ so Steel and Eastwood have strong competition for that no.1 spot, which Bowyer says he’ll make a decision over during the summer.

‘Opportunity knocked for David at Leeds with Easty being injured and I thought he looked very accomplished. His performances for the Under-21s, when he has been out on loan, and in training with us have been very very good.

‘He has stated the case and the other two now know that he is breathing down their necks. I’ll have another look at him before the end of the season, because it is the right thing to do.

‘It is the competition that we want. I’ll have the summer to contemplate and see which way we’ll go with it.’

Three into two doesn’t go does it so you tend to think that one will see their future being away from Ewood Park next season, at least in a loan capacity and with Raya the youngest maybe this is what will happen with him?
