The Lancashire derby bragging rights belong to Burnley after their League Cup win over Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday.

Rovers gave it all we could but it wasn’t enough.

Tony Mowbray, whilst happy with the efforts shown, conceded the Premier League quality the Clarets have proved the difference with the goal in first half added time, sealing a 2-0 win for the visitors, the ‘killer.’

He told the Official Website: ‘I think they were on top in a few departments with their extra quality. It was a tough ask, I thought we battled away. I’m disappointed with the goals of course, we needed to keep it tight as long as we could. The second goal right on half-time was a killer for us and it was difficult to pick them up.’

Blackburn’s second half efforts to get back into the game impressed the boss but against a side that had just spent £15m on a player, Leeds’ Chris Wood, Mowbray went on to say ‘there is a gulf there, we have to accept that.’

Now Mowbray will turn his attentions back to the priority of League One, when MK Dons visit Ewood, aiming to achieve the ultimate aim of promotion and eventually parity with Burnley once again.

He said: ‘The job for everybody at this football club is to put this club back on a level with them so we can get to the point where we can compete with them. At this moment that is a big gulf and at times it showed on the pitch tonight. I thought the players gave their all, but ultimately we come out with a defeat.’

Meanwhile the League One meeting with Fleetwood next month has been postponed.

This game on Sunday 3rd September, which had been scheduled for Sky Sports coverage, is off due to the fact Charlie Mulgrew (Scotland), Corry Evans (Northern Ireland) and Jayson Leutwiler (Canada) have all been called up for international duty so Rovers could request a postponement.
