With Fulham kicking off slightly earlier than Sheffield Wednesday the Whites know a win over Aston Villa – beaten for the first time in six on Saturday – would move them into the top-six, albeit for as little as 15 minutes or so.
Barnsley were on for all three points against Wigan – pushing them closer to League 1 – but a dramatic comeback saw them beaten on Thursday. The Tykes host a Brentford side who boosted their hopes of a top-10 finish with a crushing victory over Derby on Good Friday.
A failure to win in the last eight means Birmingham return to St Andrew’s in desperate need of a win over relegation rivals Burton – a place and two points above the bottom-three ahead of the game.
Blackburn boosted their survival hopes with a Good Friday win. If Rovers can make it back-to-back victories over Bristol City it should take them out of the relegation zone, bringing the Robins – looking for a third successive win – very much back into the picture.
A fifth straight Brighton win would keep them at least four points clear of Newcastle at the top – it would also leave Albion on the brink of having automatic promotion mathematically confirmed, unless Huddersfield fail to match their result. Wigan will aim to ruin the party at the Amex Stadium though, keeping the survival hopes alive.
Cardiff are looking to end the season positively so will target a victory over relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. A Bluebirds win and Forest – with what would be a third defeat in four – could slip into the bottom-three?
Two wins in three has basically ended any lingering Ipswich relegation fears. The sides shouldn’t meet next season but if Newcastle drop points at Portman Road the Magpies’ title ambitions could be close to ending – a Huddersfield victory and they also apply added pressure.
Leeds’ long-term position in the top-six could be lost if they slipped to a defeat at Elland Road against Wolves – who visit looking to avoid a third straight defeat.
Preston – who have lost their last two – and Norwich – beaten in three of the last four outings – are now playing to secure a top-10 finish with a play-off place out of reach for both.
A seven point gap between QPR and the bottom-three should see the R’s confident enough of staying up but if a fifth successive defeat should be suffered at Loftus Road against play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday they could worry? The Owls have to win to ensure a top-six place is retained.
Reading could move a step closer to confirming a play-off place if they can see off already relegated Rotherham – who ended a 10 game losing run with a Good Friday draw.
Good Friday’s defeat for Derby ended any slim chances of finishing in the play-offs. Huddersfield are close to securing this but Town will still have an outside chance of finishing in an automatic promotion spot – improved with a win and dropped Newcastle points again.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
