In this session of Why Did They Bother, we relive Mr Egil Ostenstad’s time at Blackburn

Why did they bother is a segment which discusses some of the flops made in our long history.

This segment is dedicated to Mr Egil Ostenstad, a former Norweigan Striker, nicknamed ‘Osten’

Ostenstad was signed up by Mr Graeme Souness in 1999, dropping down a division from Southampton. With a decent strike rate at his previous clubs, he was seen to be the man to help Blackburn into the top flight.

In Egils first season, he scored 8 goals in 28 appearances. Over his 4 year career at Rovers, he managed to score a total of 12 goals, pretty much the amount Santa Cruz has scored for us so far this year.

After a move to Rangers, then a return to Norway, Egil decided to hang up his boots after a ‘successful career’. Egil is now Director of Football for Viking in Norway.

Sasmans Thoughts

My memory of Egil is he missing an open goal against Man U, with scores tied and not long to go. Souness talked him up, but he was a flop. I really wonder why we kept him for so long….
