Gary Bowyer, the man who saved Blackburn Rovers (twice) has finally been unveiled as manager ahead of next season. Speculation had been rising and it was rumored weeks ago that the Venky’s had made their mind up despite it taking this long for the owners to announce their new appointment.

While some may have their reservations about Bowyer given the lack of experience he holds, the majority of Rovers fans feel it is a strong appointment. Yes Bowyer may not have experience but he has passion, and that has been clear.

It is widely felt that provided he is given time, money and backing, he is the man to help win the club promotion next season. He has a humongous job on his shoulders, and it is only with the cooperation of the club and arguably the removal of some board members that he will be able to succeed.

If he is to have any chance of helping Rovers win promotion, he needs to be given full control. Avoiding becoming a puppet is a necessity, which I am sure he will accomplish given his passion for the club. A critical problem of last season was the persistent interference of various conflicting members of the board, it is imperative that the club avoids this problem this season.

First on his priority list is to shift the deadwood from the club and cut down the wage bill. This is a task he must fulfill; there is a unanimous agreement amongst fans that certain players need to go.

His second task is to make suitable replacements for valuable players who hand in transfer requests. There is suitable speculation that a number of players are likely to leave this summer. If players do wish to go, he must negotiate reasonable and fair financial agreements and secondly find capable candidates to take on their role in the squad.

Thirdly, he must continue to motivate the players. At times last season frustration was incited as a number of players appeared to show a complete disregard for the fans, club and survival. The squad lacked a sense of unity, cohesion and genuine passion (of course, there were obvious exceptions). Bowyer did a fine job of coming in and instilling motivation into the team which was clearly demonstrated in the final few fixtures of the season.

More importantly, what the club needs is stability. For this to occur, the owners must cleanse the club of employees who are incapable of their jobs, and employ trustworthy candidates. The owners should also base their opinions of current affairs on actual results and the feeling of the fans.

While Bowyer may lack experience, there are many positive attributes to his managerial style which make up for that. Experience means nothing unless results are being secured and the club is doing well. He’s done it twice before so there is no reason to suggest that he cannot do it again.

Ewood Park, please welcome Team GB.
