Blackburn Rovers striker Mat Derbyshire believes that Robbie Fowler could act as a mentor for him at Ewood Park.

The 33-year-old is still trying to convince his friend, and Rovers manager Paul Ince that he is worth a contract with Rovers and should this happen Derbyshire feels that he can still learn plenty from the Liverpool legend on the training ground.

Derbyshire told the Evening Telegraph: “Robbie’s a legend as we all know.

“He’s someone I always looked at when I was younger.

“When the Premiership Wonder Years were on television, Robbie Fowler would always be on there with Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

“They’ve been the main three in the Premiership, Robbie’s been part of that. He’s a great finisher with a great footballing mind and I’ll learn a lot from him.

“He’s got great awareness in and around the box and if I can pick something like that up from him, that would be fantastic. It would help improve my game
.”

Fowler’s arrival was met with plenty of moans and groans at the time, but whatever is decided will hopefully be the right thing. Fowler has lost a lot of things about his game that made him such a great striker but not all of this can have been lost as the quality that a player that is the fourth highest goalscorer in Premier League history isn’t lost overnight. He could teach the 22-year-old (and others) a thing or two, but we also have other quality and experienced strikers to also do this, although some of them at Ewood might not have the right attitude that the former England International has???
