Grant Hanley has put pen to paper on a new five year deal at Ewood Park as Rovers pre-season preparations start (for a change) with some positive and constructive news.

The Scot endured a shaky start to the last campaign but from January onwards was a standout performer in an underperforming side devoid of confidence in the main. He was part of a rare outlet of good news in our part of the world last season as he formed a respectable centre back pairing with Scott Dann-Basten.

Some may cast a doubtful eye in the direction of the extensive length of the deal and it’s doubtful he’ll be about forever if his current performance arc continues but to have him around for next season will certainly be considered a boost by most at the club.

Hanley spoke with Rovers official website and said – “As soon as the end of the season came and I heard that the club wanted me to sign a new deal, I couldn`t wait to get it done and it feels brilliant.’

“I`ve been at the club for a while now, it`s a great club and I`m really happy to extend my stay here.”

Rovers manager Gary Bowyer, who is understandably delighted added further comment – “First and foremost, this is fantastic news for the football club.

“It is vitally important that we keep hold of our young, home-grown talent, who the supporters can identify with.

“I have been delighted with Grant`s progress from the youth team to the first team and this new contract is richly deserved after a superb season for the club.

Having worked with Hanley since a young age, it is no surprise that Bowyer is a big fan of the excessively sized craniumed one.

“He epitomises what we are about – hard working, committed to the cause and a player who is prepared to put his body on the line.’ Bowyer added.

“It is a great boost for everyone connected with the club and especially Grant, who will be looking to kick on further next season.”

Good news. Very good news infact.
