Rovers could be in line for financial penalties come the end of the season, with the club facing the stark realities of the Financial Fair Play rules that come into effect in due course.

The club is still paying the price for a massive transfer splurge that took place over the course of last summer that spectacularly failed given the huge outlay and the sub standard quality that came alongside it – step forward Danny Murphy, Dickson Etuhu, Leon Best and half of the population of Portugal.

Substantial cutbacks have been made over the summer, even if that has included shelling out for contract cancellations initially, but the wage bill is still up there with the bigger ones in the division which given Rovers limited revenue streams and general income meaning they would be in breach of the loss making guidelines set out in the new regulations.

Derek Shaw stated during a BBC Radio Lancashire event last night that failure to achieve promotion this season could mean a transfer embargo, unless further efforts are made to redress the financial imbalance.

The Managing Director did also confirm that the club could face a financial penalty even if promotion is achieved.

It would be unwise of us not to clarify that all these possibilities are circumstantial and aren’t necessarily a foregone conclusion.
