Blackburn Rovers are not actively looking to sell their more saleable playing assets – despite growing fears over the club’s financial plight.

Rovers posted accounts on Saturday that displayed the full extent of the club’s big 2012 summer blowout on players, in a failed (very failed) attempt to get promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

£54m is the current figure that Rovers have accumulated as club debt and on a considerably lower Championship income questions are rightly being asked as to how this figure is to be reduced to a more sustainable level.

One of the more obvious options – selling players of decent value – has this morning been dismissed as an immediate option, with Managing Director Derek Shaw insisting that star players such as Jordan Rhodes will not be considered for sale come the next transfer window.

‘There has been no discussion about selling players – absolutely no discussions at all,’ Derek Shaw confirmed to Sky Sports.

‘There may be clubs out there who fancy some of our players. But we are not attempting to sell our first team players, and that is on the instruction of the owners.’

‘The owners want this club to get back to the Premier League, so those discussions haven’t taken place. And if they were to take place, they would be through correspondence with the manager.

‘Like any club, the transfer window is coming and we don’t know what’s going to happen.

‘There may be clubs out there who fancy some of our players. But we are not attempting to sell our first-team players, and that is on the instruction of the owners.’

But despite these proclamations fears will inevitably be there that Rovers will cop some form of severe penalty come next summer – with Financial Fair Play regulations set to come into action to control football’s spiraling debts.
