Slater is commonly known in Australia as the journeyman. Having travelled across Australia to play football in his early years, Slater was purchased by Anderlecht in 1989 in the role of midfielder. He did not see much playing time here and moved onto lens the following year.

Robert’s time at Lens is most remembered for the attack on him by a PSG fan with a baseball bat. Whilst at lens, he was voted Oceania player of the year twice, and met the love of his life.

Robert obviously did enough at Lens to earn a £300,000 move to our beloved rovers. Fortunately for him, he became the first Australian to win the English Premier League, and this was the only season he played with Rovers. Whilst he was only a bit-part player, he was deemed a useful player with him joining West Ham, Southampton and finally Wolverhampton.

After his spell in England, he returned to Australia in 1998 and played out his career with the Northern Spirit in the now defunct NSL.

Robbie is currently a football director at the Newington College, as well as holding the role of football analyst with FOX Sports.
